Bilateral relations between Morocco and Malawi

I - Historical overview

  • The Kingdom of Morocco and Malawi established their diplomatic relations the 31 January 2001 in the form of non-resident representations.The Malawi Ambassador in Egypt is accredited to the Kingdom of Morocco. Morocco's Ambassador to South Africa is accredited to Malawi.
  • Since 2017, the bilateral relations between the two countries experienced major developments, through multiple exchanges of high-level visits, and the deepening of bilateral cooperation and partnership.
  • Both parties attach great importance to the strengthening of this positive and promising dynamic ongoing.
II - Political Dialogue

Morocco and Malawi signed in 2002 a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of political Consultations between their Ministries of Foreign Affairs

In the frame of this agreement, extended in 2017, several bilateral consultations were held as follow:

  • Mr. Emmanuel FABIANO, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation undertook a working visit to Morocco on 03 and 04 July 2018. Three important agreements were signed during this visit regarding the exemption of visas for holders of diplomatic or service passports, education and tourism.
  • The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, M Nasser Bourita received, on January 09, 2018, Mr. Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister for International Relations.
  • Prior to this, Mr. Emmanuel FABIANO undertook a working visit to Morocco from January 5 to 10, 2017, at the head of a large delegation representing the sectors of finance, investment, agriculture and fishing. During this visit, Mr. Fabiano had discussions with the Ministers and the Heads of the Ministry of Tourism, the Departments in charge of Water, the Department of Investment, the Department of Rural Development and Waters and forests, the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, AMCI, LPEE, CGEM, BCP and ONCF.
  • On 10-11 December 2018, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Emmanuel Fabiano, took part in Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Marrakesh, Morocco.
  • On 23 March 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,Mr. Emmanuel Fabiano,took part in the African Ministerial Conference on Support of the African Union to the United Nations Political Process on the Regional Dispute over the Sahara in Marrakech le 25 mars 2019.
  • The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malawi, Mr. Francis Kasaila, visited morocco on May 5, 2017 meeting with Mr. Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The two countries are committed to reinforce their consultations within the African Union body on all matters of common interest and those concerning the continent.

Legal framework:

1. Finalized agreements:

  • Memorandum of Understanding in the field of water and sanitation;
  • Agreements on the reciprocal promotion and protection of investors;
  • Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Land Administration and Housing and Building Management;
  • Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Agriculture.

2. Ongoing Agreements:

  • Draft Framework Convention for Cooperation between OFPPT / AMCI and Minister of Education of Science and Technology of Malawi;
  • Agreement on Aerial Services;
  • Cooperation Agreement in the field of Youth and Sports;
  • Cooperation Agreement in the field of Energy and Mining;
