Morocco assumes the presidency of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union for the month of September.

This is the first time since his return to the AU that the kingdom has been the chair of this permanent decision-making body for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts. Morocco was also elected in 2018 to the AU Peace and Security Council for a two-year term.

"The Moroccan presidency of the AU Peace and Security Council will be the occasion to realize the royal vision of joint African action on peace and security, a prerequisite for a sustainable development of the Hemisphere guaranteeing dignity and security. the prosperity of the African citizen, "said the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA-UN), Mohammed Arrouchi, in an interview with the MAP.

Emerging challenges and threats

The Moroccan diplomat also reported to the MAP "the challenges and emerging threats with a security dimension to contain by the contains", citing in particular climate change, migration, epidemics, violent extremism and cybersecurity.

"Climate change, transitional justice, the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, security sector reform in African countries, peace-security-development interdependence and mediation, all of which are among the most priority of the Moroccan presidency of the Peace and Security Council of the AU, "said Mohammed Arrouchi, who will preside on Tuesday the first meeting of the Council for the month of September.

"The Moroccan Chairmanship of the AU Peace and Security Council places paramount importance on interdepartmental coordination within the pan-African institution to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of African joint action on peace. and security, "added the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the AU and UNECA.

Still for the latter, "the guiding and fundamental principles of the Moroccan presidency of the Council is to ensure the preservation of African unity and solidarity through clarity, objectivity and impartiality, putting the interests of the Africa and the African citizen at the heart of its concerns ".

The Moroccan diplomat also recalled in this context the speech made by King Mohammed VI to the 28th summit of the African Union, held in January 2017 in Addis Ababa, in which the sovereign said "You will see: as soon as the Kingdom will sit effectively, and that it can contribute to the agenda of activities, its action will concur, on the contrary, federate and move forward.

During this presidency of the Council, Morocco will be the main interlocutor of the pan-African institution in matters of peace and security with the other partners.
